Goodreads Monday : 12/15/19

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme that was started by @Lauren’s Page Turners. The meme is pretty easy to follow, to participate simply choose a random book from your TBR and explain why you want to read it!

After randomizing via Goodreads (going to my to-read shelf, scrolling down and putting sort order by random) the following book tumbled first from that crowded shelf…

The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd (Amazon Affiliate Link)

Summary from Goodreads :

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father’s gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father’s handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father’s madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island’s inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father’s dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it’s too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father’s genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells’s classic The Island of Dr. MoreauThe Madman’s Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we’ll do anything to know and the truths we’ll go to any lengths to protect.

Confession time, I did cheat a little in choosing this book since it was 5th or 6th on the randomized list. The cover caught my attention and the summary even more so! Sounds like a modern Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and also reminds me to read Jane Eyre, a goal for 2020.

Have you read The Madman’s Daughter or other books by Megan Shepherd? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks so much for checking out this week’s Goodreads Monday. I have posts set up to go live over the rest of this week so it will be a more active week than usual. Hope everyone is having a great mid-month, and an even greater upcoming holiday. ~ Kitty

  1. Wow, this actually sounds really interesting! I haven’t read any of the books that you mentioned in the post but Rebecca has been on my to-read list for a while, just haven’t managed to get hold of the book~! I might just add this one to my TBR too… lol
