Sincerest thanks if you do!
This is my first ever book subscription box (and unboxing) so this is super exciting! I’d heard that Owlcrate was sending out two books this month so rushed to sub last month on September 29th. They shipped via priority mail on the 16th of October, and the box arrived on October 19th. The subscription will renew November 1st and I’m tempted to renew because next month’s theme looks so lovely, there was a little card included here that details the theme of it. Everything arrived in fantastic condition and the decorated owl-themed box is so cute. Both books are signed by their authors and sealed in protective slipcovers. The books also have additional lovely note cards from the authors.
But enough of my rambling, lets go on to the pictures.
My first impression was that the box looked so small. But it’s actually packed to the brim with sizable stuff and the books are standard-sized and thick hardbacks.
I’m not great at resisting reading spoilers and/or people’s contemplations about book boxes. I’d heard people guessing that I Hope You Get This Message might be included so I wasn’t surprised to see that one- I was however surprised to see Crier’s War which I’d had no idea would even be a possible inclusion. OwlCrate really surprised with that one (or I just was lucky enough to not encounter a spoiler about its inclusion lol) both books were already on my to-read list, am especially thrilled to get into I Hope You Get This Message was seems like a sort of contemporary YA dystopian with sci-fi elements. They’re both thick books and (though not pictured here) contain colorful notes/bonus cards from the authors. Really nice added touch. Also love that they have these protective bags.
The art for the themed Owlcrate postcard is very cute!! I took a pretty close-up pic of the Warcross sticker, it’s about 3×3 inches and kind of reminds me of a 90s aesthetic lol.
Two enamel pins and three magnetic bookmarks! The pins have a real weight to them, with impressive tiny details and a vividly colorful sheen. The three bookmarks have fully illustrated fronts and backs, and also look very sturdy and durable. I love that they’re housed in protective plastic, absolutely perfect condition.
My second favorite item in this box is this cute little Illuminae-themed tin box. Has little quotes and lovely designs all over. It opens and closes smoothly but does make some audible noise. This tin container is perfectly sized to hold the various items that came with this month’s box but I’m still thinking of what other cute things could go into it. Maybe an enamel pin collection?
Now for my first place-ranking favorite collectable from this box…
I audibly gasped when seeing this. First, the velvet case is of very high quality. And the necklace inside is just beautiful. I don’t know if these pictures do it justice but I’m really impressed. Immediately wanted to show this to everyone lol. Very pretty and has such delicate details. Very subtlely sci-fi themed as well. Will be handling this with utter care.
And now a collage of all the items… (btw the scarf surrounding the Owlcrate box was not included lol)
Was it worth it?
In short terms, yes. Lots of pretty stuff, one new release book, one pre-release book, and all of the items are limited edition collectables. If you ever needed to sell them together or individually in the future on eBay or such, you’d likely make back the money paid twice over or more. For example, I saw Narnia-themed bookends from an Owlcrate box sell for $20+ multiple times and that’s just one item from a box. Keeping the stuff you like and selling the stuff you don’t could potentially pay for the boxes themselves.
Now to do a few calculations on the total value of this box. It goes for $29.99 plus $7.99 for priority shipping in the US. I ended up paying $37.98 total for the lot, no tax for it where I live. They also ship to Canada for $9.99 shipping and the Worldwide shipping rate is $19.99.
The two books included are October 2019 releases and Crier’s War retails at $17.99 (it’s currently available for $12.99 on Amazon) and pre-release I Hope You Get This Message retails at $17.99 (with a preorder price of $14.39 on Amazon) Lets just say the books are worth $29.
The wonderful quality of the collectables (that necklace, just… wow.) is easily worth a lot more than $8. In closing, I’m definitely happy about my purchase and really curious to see what November’s box will hold.
Owlcrate also has a referral program, if you make 3 referrals you’ll get a free box. Here is my referral link if you’re interested in trying a month. Feel free to let me know if you do sign up so I can give you my sincerest thanks. And thanks in advance to any who do sign up.
Have you tried Owlcrate before or are wanting to try it in the future? Are you subbed to any other subscription boxes? I am happy to read your thoughts and thanks so much for your likes and comments. Hope everyone is having a fun weekend. I’m currently reading We Have Always Lived In The Castle by Shirley Jackson and recently finished Ninth House, still working on a review for that. It’s been a great reading week. ~ Kitty
