First Line Fridays (9/20/2019)

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page. Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first

Finally… reveal the book!

I hope everyone is having a fabulous friday, I’m in the middle of four books lol. After finishing them I plan on taking a short reading break (maybe a week) but my book blogging will continue. There are so many great reading topics and books I’ve already read that are worth talking about.

But without further ado, here is today’s first line..

Retvenko leaned against the bar and tucked his nose into his dirty shot glass. The whiskey had failed to warm him. Nothing could get you warm in this Saintsforsaken city. And there was no escaping the smell, the throat-choking stew of bilge, clams, and wet stone that seemed to have soaked into his pores as if he’d been steeping in the city’s essence like the world’s worst cup of tea.

This is the sequel to one of my absolute favorite books this year, Six of Crows. Unfortunately my Six of Crows googling and tumblr’ing has resulted in coming across major spoilers for the whole book, I know pretty much everything big that’s going to happen and I have avoided reading it for a while. I’m going to read it in October, if not sooner. Even though I love seeing people’s fanart and hilarious memes for the series I’m reading, I highly suggest avoiding looking these things up before you’ve finished all the books that are out for a specific series. Thankfully, I avoided googling Holly Black’s The Cruel Prince series so if there are any major plot twists they’ll be super effective!

Thanks as always for checking in to this week’s First Line Fridays. This one was on the easier side for some, so I hope some people guessed it. It’s always cool to happen to guess the book of the week.

  1. I’ve had the six of crows on my TBR for a long time now… I should definitely get around to reading it soon. I loved how descriptive the first lines of the sequel were! I’m excited to try it now!! 💙 Jen
