Goodreads Monday : 9/9/2019

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme that was started by @Lauren’s Page Turners. The meme is pretty easy to follow, to participate simply choose a random book from your TBR and explain why you want to read it!

After randomizing via Goodreads (going to my to-read shelf, scrolling down and putting sort order by random) the following book tumbled first from that crowded shelf-

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

They killed my mother.
They took our magic.
They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

One of my little bookish regrets was not picking up a hardcover of this when I saw it heavily discounted at my local grocery store. Have heard good things about this fantasy novel and mixed opinions as well. Whether great or just above average, the concept, setting, and characters are a breath of fresh air in what is often a same-y high fantasy landscape and I’m definitely up to trying it sometime. Apparently there are multiple points of view, three or so? If anyone has read this I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Until next time,

  1. I am in the same boat. It has been on my shelf for awhile, but I am not a big fantasy fan, so haven’t actually started it yet. The premise and blurb really attracted me though. I hope you read it, then post so I can see what you think.

  2. I read it last year and I thought it was okay. I enjoyed it but not as much as I expected to and if I remember correctly it took me quite a few days to read it (which is unusual for me, especially with fantasies)! I’m still curious enough to read the second book though! Hope you enjoy it 🙂
